Is your putter loft creating a 12-inch skid phase instead of immediate forward roll?

By Best Golf ProsHuman Edited September 2026

Off-the-rack putters are stamped with 3° to 4° of static loft, but how you deliver that loft determines whether your ball rolls smoothly or bounces unpredictably.

If you forward-press aggressively, you may strike the ball with negative loft, driving the ball down into the turf and causing it to hop into the air. If your hands lag behind, you add dynamic loft, launching the ball airborne and producing an 8- to 14-inch skid phase where the ball slides without spinning. During the skid phase, any tiny turf imperfection knocks the ball off line.

Truth: The 3-Inch Forward Roll Standard High-speed photometric cameras (720 FPS) measure the exact moment of true forward roll. Certified putting fitters adjust head loft in a bending machine so your dynamic launch angle is 1.5° to 2.0° with a slight upward angle of attack. This creates immediate forward overspin in under three inches, stabilizing the ball's roll and holding your line through afternoon spike marks.
